Tide Pooling & Beach Combing

Kodiak often has a negative tide, and when the ocean waters recede, the nooks and crannies along the beach are filled with water and creatures who didn’t get the memo to leave. In most spots on the island, it’s easy to walk along the beaches below the tide line and see small pools teeming with life, such as starfish, sea stars, sea cucumbers, sea urchins and even the occasional octopus.

It’s a great way to learn about life under the ocean and simply to get an up-close view of sea creatures that normally are either too deep or too shy to be seen. Think of tide pooling as SCUBA diving without all that swimming
